My Approach to Tutoring

My mission as a tutor is to equip the student to draw out what is interesting for him/her personally in each subject, and to take ownership of the progress. I have seen extraordinary results from students of varying abilities, based on the principle that each subject or academic milestone contains something relevant and interesting to the student's developing personality-- my job is to give him/her the tools to explore these interests, and to feel at home with the subject.

In teaching modern languages, I emphasise an immersive approach, based on the student's existing interests and personality: the idea is to discover topics and registers that will make the student's mastery of the language an instrument of self-expression, leading to comfort and fluency. I insist on rigorous phonetic exercises, to give the student the confidence in speaking that comes with muscle memory.

The Classical languages are an advanced analytical exercise, and I teach my students at all levels to think like linguists. This reduces the amount of rote learning and makes sense of their pre-existing knowledge, however scattered. The result is that they are ready to actually enjoy Classical literature with an ironclad approach that doesn't change as texts grow more advanced.

As an admissions consultant, I have always encouraged my students to discover and deepen specific areas of interest, and to grow from the persona of a "prospective applicant" into an authentic and engaged candidate who will demonstrably make the most of his/her potential.

My commitment is always to results, and I believe in challenging my students. I've found that humour is a great way to make sure the challenges remain enjoyable.

Fun Facts About Me

My hobbies include poetry (I won the Newdigate prize as an undergraduate), film, travelling to somewhat out of the way places (most recently, Transnistria), and reading pretty much anything published before 1980. I’m also forever trying to work my way through a book on formal logic, and learning to code beyond what my job requires.

My Client Testimonials

"Arina taught my son French to scholarship standard. She was punctual, friendly, very knowledgeable and had a great way with my son. He never complained about going for lessons and really enjoyed the sessions with Arina. "
  • Classics, French, admissions
"Arina is very learned with a wide and deep knowledge of both French and Latin--the subjects in which she tutored for me; and she is also very good at communicating them to pupils at various levels and of various abilities. On top of this she is very cultivated, with wide interests which she communicates enthusiastically. This renders her a stimulating as well as a sound tutor. I have no hesitation in recommending her."
