Anna Harrison - Private Tutor in Central London

Anna Harrison Private Tutor in Central London

I was brought up in Central London where I attended Glendower and St Paul's Girls' School. After that, I went on to read Engineering at Trinity College, Cambridge, before working at Goldman Sachs for the past two and half years. Earlier this year I left the City in order to pursue a long standing interest in Medicine. I have always loved Maths and Science and truly believe that we need to encourage students to continue with their STEM subjects. Having had some fantastic teachers throughout my education I really understand the importance of engaging with students, and ensuring that sessions are fun and in context. Having gone through the UK private school system myself, I am very familiar with the quirks of the British education system, from picking secondary schools at 11 or 13 plus, to navigating the university application system.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience

My first experience tutoring was nearly 10 years ago, volunteering in a homework club for the Rugby Portobello Trust. Since then I have gone on to help with a range of subjects informally with family and friends from 11 plus to GCSE Science and A-level science projects. Having gone through the UK private school system myself, I am very familiar with the quirks of the British education system, from picking secondary schools at 11 or 13 plus, to navigating the university application system.

Since leaving Cambridge, I have spent the last two and a half years working for a top investment bank, where I mentored interns and new joiners; I am additionally experienced in interview preparation.

Along with academic teaching, I have also taught skiing and lacrosse to a variety of ages.

My Approach to Tutoring

I am a big advocate in making sure students are equipped with all the tools to learn that will benefit them outside of our sessions , such as organisation and effective study techniques. I believe that it is really important that students learn to break problems down in a logical way so that they have the ability to tackle problems that might initially seem foreign - whether academic or in life! I spend a lot of time asking questions to make sure they truly understand the concepts and then get them to teach it back to me as a way of clarifying their understanding. I try to come up with creative ways to learn and enforce concepts that are applicable to the real world; indeed with one maths student who particularly enjoyed football, I designed a premier league exercise to keep him engaged and practice his maths at the same time - I think he nearly forgot we were doing maths at all!

Fun Facts About Me

I am an avid sports woman - I was a member of the England Lacrosse squad and captained and coached the Cambridge 1st team to the BUCS National Final. Recently I have started Open Water swimming which I find totally invigorating, although some people think I am mad! To continue the water theme, I have also started rowing on the Thames.

I absolutely love skiing, and am a qualified Canadian ski instructor.

I used to be a keen pianist, achieving distinction in my Grade 8 piano. I am currently attempting to dust off the cobwebs!

I am a home-schooling specialist and trained teacher, with a Cambridge first-class degree and experience working at a top UK boarding school. Having taught classes of students of wide-ranging abilities, I am aware of the importance of catering for the specific needs of individuals; this is what primarily draws me to tutoring. There is nothing more satisfying than having the time to sit and work through the challenges that a particular student is facing, one-to-one. As a teacher, I know the value that this can add to both their achievement and also their enjoyment of schoolwork. So often seemingly overwhelming problems are born of a simple misunderstanding which can be quickly ironed out within individual tutor time, and I thoroughly enjoy getting to know the individual learning styles and interests of my students. ...
I am a Cambridge University graduate who graduated with a First Class BA & MSci in Natural Sciences, working as a tutor while I train to become a therapist. I achieved 6 A* A-levels, came 7th of 610 in 1st year Natural Sciences, then was ranked top of the year in my chosen specialty of Materials Science in 2nd year. Realising that the process of learning and development mattered more to me than the content itself, I pivoted away from a career in science to one of teaching and ultimately therapy.

I have 5+ years experience with students aged 4-21, including SEN, in a range of subjects including Math, Physics, Materials Science, English, EFL, entrance exams and even swimming. In my tutoring I specialise in confidence, motivation and exam mindset preparation, and I prioritise deep conceptual understanding over rote memorisation. My lively style is engaging and fosters good relationships with students.

As a training therapist I use my skills to assess the individual needs of every student to create a style and learning plan that works best for them. ...

Earlier that year I graduated with a first class degree in English Language and Literature from Christ Church, Oxford, where I was one of the twelve original Reuben Scholars. My papers in Shakespeare and Beckett for Finals were classed as publishable. Throughout my time at Oxford and Harrow, I have accumulated extensive experience tutoring privately for a range of abilities, from pre-test to university admissions. Although my undergraduate degree was in the arts, I have always nurtured a healthy interest in subjects across the curriculum, having studied Further Mathematics and Physics at A Level, and I am continually excited by the prospect of facilitating the development of a student’s academic pursuits in a variety of disciplines. A constant desire to advance my own knowledge energises me as a tutor, and I believe that communicating this enthusiasm allows me to stimulate both the curiosity and diligence of my tutees. ...

Following Cambridge I enjoyed a brief stint in Investment Banking at Morgan Stanley, where my desire to pursue a career in Medicine crystallised. Since graduating from Cambridge 13 years ago I have taught students of all sorts of abilities and ages (5-58) anywhere from Notting Hill to Nairobi. My curiosity about the world has drawn me to journalism as well as teaching. After graduating I went on to work in schools, discovering a passion for education whilst working as both a teacher and SEN specialist in both Secondary and Primary schools. Since becoming a private tutor I have taught a range of subjects and ages and have even spent two years working as the Household Tutor for an American-Iranian family, teaching a boy from pre-school to KS2 (ages 4 to 7).

Early Years and Primary are my specialty but I teach a lot of subjects - everything up to GCSE and all Humanities up to and including undergraduate, as well as 7+, 11+, 13+ (Westminster, Harrow, Eton Pre-test) and US exams. I also am available for residential and Skype tuition. ...
