Anna Harrison - Private Tutor in Central London
I was brought up in Central London where I attended Glendower and St Paul's Girls' School. After that, I went on to read Engineering at Trinity College, Cambridge, before working at Goldman Sachs for the past two and half years. Earlier this year I left the City in order to pursue a long standing interest in Medicine. I have always loved Maths and Science and truly believe that we need to encourage students to continue with their STEM subjects. Having had some fantastic teachers throughout my education I really understand the importance of engaging with students, and ensuring that sessions are fun and in context. Having gone through the UK private school system myself, I am very familiar with the quirks of the British education system, from picking secondary schools at 11 or 13 plus, to navigating the university application system.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
My first experience tutoring was nearly 10 years ago, volunteering in a homework club for the Rugby Portobello Trust. Since then I have gone on to help with a range of subjects informally with family and friends from 11 plus to GCSE Science and A-level science projects. Having gone through the UK private school system myself, I am very familiar with the quirks of the British education system, from picking secondary schools at 11 or 13 plus, to navigating the university application system.
Since leaving Cambridge, I have spent the last two and a half years working for a top investment bank, where I mentored interns and new joiners; I am additionally experienced in interview preparation.
Along with academic teaching, I have also taught skiing and lacrosse to a variety of ages.
My Approach to Tutoring
I am a big advocate in making sure students are equipped with all the tools to learn that will benefit them outside of our sessions , such as organisation and effective study techniques. I believe that it is really important that students learn to break problems down in a logical way so that they have the ability to tackle problems that might initially seem foreign - whether academic or in life! I spend a lot of time asking questions to make sure they truly understand the concepts and then get them to teach it back to me as a way of clarifying their understanding. I try to come up with creative ways to learn and enforce concepts that are applicable to the real world; indeed with one maths student who particularly enjoyed football, I designed a premier league exercise to keep him engaged and practice his maths at the same time - I think he nearly forgot we were doing maths at all!
Fun Facts About Me
I am an avid sports woman - I was a member of the England Lacrosse squad and captained and coached the Cambridge 1st team to the BUCS National Final. Recently I have started Open Water swimming which I find totally invigorating, although some people think I am mad! To continue the water theme, I have also started rowing on the Thames.
I absolutely love skiing, and am a qualified Canadian ski instructor.
I used to be a keen pianist, achieving distinction in my Grade 8 piano. I am currently attempting to dust off the cobwebs!
