I am a current graduate student, attending the Courtauld Institute of Art where I study German Modernism. I specialise in US exam preparation, reading comprehension, Art History, English (writing and literature), History, and French language. I have benefitted from one-on-one tutoring throughout my education in order to prepare for standardized tests (ISEE/SSAT, SAT/ACT, GRE), which helped me build confidence and was a huge factor in my success. Having grown up in Manhattan and having attended boarding school and university in the US, I am intimately acquainted with the American educational system and the testing and admissions processes for US high schools and universities. Because of my background, I am well equipped to provide admission advice and counselling.

In New York, I attended a private, all-girls school, Convent of the Sacred Heart, before continuing my education at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. At Choate, I took many Advanced Placement and honors courses. I achieved a 35 (of 36) on my ACT and attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee where I double-majored in Art History and French. Before beginning my graduate studies this September, in order to improve my German, I attended the Middlebury College Intensive Summer Language Program in Middlebury, Vermont, an 8 week, immersive program where all classes and socializing are conducted in German.

After I graduated from Vanderbilt in 2018 while applying to graduate school, I worked with Curator Stephen Brown and Chief Curator Darsie Alexander at the Jewish Museum in New York City where I wrote exhibition texts, proposals, and theses, researched and conceptualised upcoming exhibitions, and conducted primary source research, translation, and transcription in French and German. This past year, I also worked at the Rubin Museum of Art, a Himalayan and Buddhist art museum, in the Programming Department under Head of Programs and Engagement, Tim McHenry, and Head of Programs, Dawn Eshelman, where I focused on lecture, meditation, and performance series. I conceptualised and created my own program that occurred on Slow Art Day in April 2019, consisting of activities to foster deeper examination of specific artworks over three one-hour long periods.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience

As mentioned above, I personally benefitted from tutoring. My tutors inspired confidence and developed my skills outside of the classroom. Throughout my high school and university career, I was a peer tutor for younger students. At Choate, I taught French to struggling students. Most notably, I successfully brought one of my students from a D to a B+ end grade. At the Rubin, I was a museum docent, conducting tours as needed. The tour participants ranged in age (students to seniors) and ability (Verbal Description and Sensory tours for visitors who are blind or partially sighted, ‘Mindful Connections’ tours for visitors with dementia). In my docent training, I learned valuable skills such as group management, but more importantly, the Rubin method of conducting tours is focused on participation. Docents guide visitors in their viewing of works by asking questions and fostering visual engagement, rather than simply giving the information. This has deeply informed my method of tutoring.

My Approach to Tutoring

My approach to tutoring is defined by encouraging, inspiring confidence, and minimising anxiety in my students. I provide a structured, supportive learning environment by prioritising open communication and clear explanation. I tailor the curriculum to the tutee's strengths and weaknesses and specific learning style (written, visual, auditory). I believe individualised attention, a nuanced approach, and repetition are key to success. I encourage students to understand the methodology and underlying concepts behind the information they learn for better overall comprehension. I aim to provide tutored students with the fundamentals of critical thinking by guiding them through concepts and questions without giving them the answers. The crux of tutoring is inspiring the tutored child to be driven to do the work and understand that the challenges they face are not as intimidating as they may seem.

In regards to the ISEE/SSAT and ACT/SAT, I aim to demystify what can be a daunting testing process. I stress learning the types of questions the test makers ask so as to recognise shortcuts, teach time management and methods for making educated guesses via the process of elimination when a clear answer is not evident. I understand how intimidating the US admissions process is, and my goal is to bring positivity to a difficult process and to make applications and testing as smooth as possible for both tutees and parents. I strive to leave a lasting positive impact on each student I have the privilege to work with.

In my spare time, I am an avid reader, yogi, hiker, and cook.

My intellectual career is driven by my fascinating in artworks that engage in and connect with contemporary socioeconomic themes, particularly the perceived inaccessibility (intellectual, physical, and monetary) of contemporary art. Ultimately, I would like to work in the public art sphere.
