Dr Mia Hughes - Private Tutor in North London
I am caring and friendly and my enthusiasm brings out how fun, exciting and profound Physics and Maths should be. My style is to impart an intuitive understanding through clear explanations and to build the confidence of students, equipping them with both the analytical skills and the self-belief required to achieve their goals. I now tutor full-time and have been tutoring part time for several years.
I have a PhD in Theoretical Physics (string theory) from Imperial College London. I graduated with a First-Class Honours from a four-year undergraduate Masters course in Physics, also at Imperial.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
I recently completed my PhD in Theoretical Physics at Imperial College London, where I carried out research in String Theory, a subject at the forefront of particle physics. Prior to this, I graduated with a First-Class Honours from a four-year undergraduate Masters course in Physics, also at Imperial, where I was awarded the Tyndall Prize for best Masters thesis in Theoretical Physics. I worked part-time as a tutor throughout my studies, and have now been tutoring full-time for a year. I have hundreds of hours of experience tutoring Physics and Maths, and this has taught me some great insights into how to be an effective and valuable tutor.
My Approach to Tutoring
In both Physics and Maths I try to teach the meaning behind every equation in order to build up a really strong understanding of the subject. In any calculation students should ideally know exactly why they are taking each step along the way. I try to teach my students how to think logically and clearly about their subject, which helps them not only to grasp the topics I teach them but also how to learn new concepts outside of tutorials - both in lessons and when reading their textbooks.
Fun Facts About Me
My time outside of work is mostly dedicated to making music: playing guitar, keyboard and writing and recording songs. I am in a minorly(!) successful band with some friends and we play gigs around the country. I also spend a lot of time on Physics research - since it's theoretical I only need a pen and paper. I have some big ideas, but it takes a long time to explore them mathematically...
