My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
I trained at Newcastle University, at a small rural school and a large inner city school, working with the full range of students from bottom set year 7 to top grade sixth formers and everything in between. This has given me familiarity with all aspects of the GCSE and A level examinations, as well as in issues such as student motivation and confidence, and creating revision materials. I love the challenge and variety of teaching, and sharing the ways, big in small, in which I successfully learned languages.
My Approach to Tutoring
I like to alternate when tutoring languages between natural conversation and grammar work. During the conversation phase I'll make subtle notes and help students develop their coping strategies to maximise their communicative ability with the vocabulary and grammar they know. Then I'll use those notes to work on grammar with the student, expanding and reinforcing according to their ability and needs, before getting back to speaking. I am happy to work in whichever way the client prefers, such as if they would like coaching on the thought processes needed to pass a listening past paper, but in general this is the approach I like to use for language tutoring.
Fun Facts About Me
I am a keen student of languages in my own time, which has kept me in touch with what the experience of the student is like. I have recent reached good levels in Spanish and Italian and have just embarked on my Dutch-learning journey! I am also extremely sporty and when not at an event to practice my languages, I am fencing or playing badminton.
