Josephine Waugh - Private Tutor in London

Josephine Waugh Private Tutor in London

My name is Josephine and I am currently completing my Masters degree in History of Architecture at the UCL Faculty of the Built Environment (MA), The Bartlett; prior to which I studied History of Art at the University of Cambridge (BA): 2:1. During my undergraduate degree at Cambridge University I received a grant to spend six months in Mexico City researching Mexican architectural modernism and the development of the urban landscape, working towards an undergraduate thesis that I am currently extending at a postgraduate level. During this time I worked closely with the university of Mexico in their archives department.

I attended a comprehensive secondary school in north London, and achieved straight A* - A qualifications in both my GCSE and A Levels. For the latter I studied History of Art, English and History, and received full marks on both my final History and English A Level exams. My specialities lie in urban, social and aesthetic history, philosophy and socio-economic and socio-political critical theory. I am fluent in all humanities and social science subjects. I have ambitions of becoming an academic, and hope to impart this passion and enthusiasm onto the students I teach, despite any lack of confidence they may have.

I have extensive experience working with children, having worked as an au pair in Madrid, Spain between my undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and as a regular childminder for a family in central London.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience

I have no previous experience in tutoring, however I have worked teaching children during my time as a child minder, and as an au pair in Madrid. I was hired to teach English to a two year old child, which I very much enjoyed. I am very patient and can help children to develop their knowledge from the ground up, starting from the very basics.

My Approach to Tutoring

Having been educated at a comprehensive school, I appreciate the importance of becoming an avid and dedicated independent learner. I have trained myself to work quickly and efficiently in exams and have a number of study techniques to help improve memory and comprehension of subjects within a high pressure environment. I can help students to produce quality work , finding original source material and responding to strict academic criteria, at the same time developing an enthusiasm for learning.

I encourage creative thinking and endeavour to find passion and interest in all subjects, as I believe this is key to developing a thorough understanding of the material at hand. I believe that patience and consistency are essential to helping students achieve the best grade possible.

Fun Facts About Me

I have a vast number of interests and experience outside of academia.

I am incredibly passionate about art and design, and worked as Executive Assistant to the Editor in Chief, and as Special Projects Coordinator, of Wallpaper* magazine in the interim between my studies. I both interned and worked for Frieze fair and magazine, and for Phaidon publishing house. I have cultivated an extensive amount of personal and professional relationships within this field. At 15, I won the Guardian Young Critic of the Year Award (in the 15-18 year old category). During my time at Cambridge, I worked closely with the Kettle's Yard Gallery, independently curating a show for the gallery and writing multiple research papers for their director.

Throughout my childhood and teenage years I excelled in Thai kick boxing and contemporary dance, the latter I hoped to turn into a career before gravitating towards academia. I modelled and acted throughout my teenage years and my early twenties to earn my financial independence. During my last year of sixth form, I did not attend school regularly as my modelling and acting career had begun to garner momentum. I taught my A Level subjects to myself at home and achieved incredibly high scores. I became skilled at teaching myself course material outside of the context at school, and maintaining academic excellency whilst excelling in my career.

I am a home-schooling specialist and trained teacher, with a Cambridge first-class degree and experience working at a top UK boarding school. Having taught classes of students of wide-ranging abilities, I am aware of the importance of catering for the specific needs of individuals; this is what primarily draws me to tutoring. There is nothing more satisfying than having the time to sit and work through the challenges that a particular student is facing, one-to-one. As a teacher, I know the value that this can add to both their achievement and also their enjoyment of schoolwork. So often seemingly overwhelming problems are born of a simple misunderstanding which can be quickly ironed out within individual tutor time, and I thoroughly enjoy getting to know the individual learning styles and interests of my students. ...
I was born and raised in the United Kingdom and won an academic scholarship to Sherborne School at the age of 13. When I was 16 years old my family relocated to the United States, so I completed my secondary education at a competitive high school in the Houston area. After quickly adjusting to the American system, I achieved excellent results in my AP exams and SAT tests and received a place in the prestigious Plan II Honours program at the University of Texas at Austin. I graduated a year early with high honours, a second major in History, and an undergraduate dissertation that was awarded special honours. I have years of experience tutoring for the SAT and ACT exams and experience teaching the American public school curriculum in the humanities. I specialize in preparing international students wishing to attend university in the United States. ...
Having studied in a boarding school in West Sussex, where I was a deputy-head of house and School prefect, I studied Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. At university, I encountered a wide variety of disciplines and ways of thinking; from politics, to psychology to history. I completed an MSc degree in Law and Anthropology at The London School of Economics (LSE), during which I worked as an administrator for a legal research network and organised conferences for a international think tank, most notably a conference at the European Union parliament in Brussels.

Following my studies, I worked for the Department for Education in Westminster, where I advised schools on how to progress and collaborate with each other. I also began volunteering with a grassroots educational charity that mentors children from underrepresented communities through organising sports coaching and workshops.

I then went on to teach History at Rugby School, a top-tier boarding school in the Midlands, where I taught students between the ages of 13 to 18 years. I was also a pastoral tutor in a boarding house, where I was responsible for helping the sixth form students with their university and UCAS applications.

Prior to studying a degree in Anthropology at Cambridge (BA Hons 2:1), I went to Oakham School where I studied an eclectic mix of A-levels (History, Geography, Biology and Fine Art), and achieved top grades in all four subjects. This range of subjects, and the degree that followed, reflect my interest in people and why we behave as we do. Indeed I am continuing to pursue this interest, and am currently studying an MSc in Psychology at the University of Surrey.

Before studying at Surrey, I worked in the advertising industry (J Walter Thompson) and for a behavioural consultancy as a Project Manager. Whilst on the graduate scheme at J Walter Thompson, I won the Chrissie Barker award for Top Graduate in my year, achieved a Distinction in my IPA (Institute for Practitioners of Advertising) Foundation Award, and completed the IPA Effectiveness, and Legislation and Regulation awards. I also spent a month working and travelling in Japan, which was utterly fascinating.

Throughout my professional career I built a reputation as someone people turned to for support and I enjoyed helping develop new starters. I also have a wealth of insight when it comes to CV’s, personal statements and interview techniques – all of which are front of mind for me having just applied to university again myself. ...

I grew up in a family that moved every few years, so I attended school first in private academies in Singapore, then the U.S. public school system. I went on to Harvard University, where I focused on the social sciences and graduated with a degree in Women & Gender Studies. After working in tech in the US, including over 3 years building and leading the customer support organization at Uber, I am currently pursuing a Master of Science at the London School of Economics.

As a lifelong bookworm and overall nerd, I look to bring that excitement for learning to those around me, be that within a classroom or in the workplace. During my undergraduate years, I focused my extracurricular time tutoring in and leading an organization that provided free English Second Language classes. At Uber, I personally coached 11 direct reports to develop leadership, analytical, and people management skills, either directly promoting or facilitating their promotion to higher level roles within the company.

I am well versed in the US system, including AP and college entrance exams, and I particularly enjoy working with students through the entire admissions processes, especially when it comes to personal essays. In addition, I can support any students looking to gain presentation and data analysis skills. You can always count of me to bring some humor and levity to facilitate learning, whether the topic is the SAT exam or using Excel. ...
