Luke Howarth - Professional Teacher in Central London
I took a teaching post at Harrow School in 2015, teaching IGCSEs in English Language and Literature and delivering lectures to A-level students. I was also made Director-in-Residence and Master-in-Charge of Debating. Earlier that year I graduated with a first class degree in English Language and Literature from Christ Church, Oxford, where I was one of the twelve original Reuben Scholars. My papers in Shakespeare and Beckett for Finals were classed as publishable. Throughout my time at Oxford and Harrow, I have accumulated extensive experience tutoring privately for a range of abilities, from pre-test to university admissions. Although my undergraduate degree was in the arts, I have always nurtured a healthy interest in subjects across the curriculum, having studied Further Mathematics and Physics at A Level, and I am continually excited by the prospect of facilitating the development of a student’s academic pursuits in a variety of disciplines. A constant desire to advance my own knowledge energises me as a tutor, and I believe that communicating this enthusiasm allows me to stimulate both the curiosity and diligence of my tutees.

My Approach to Tutoring
When I was fourteen, during a discussion of Sylvia Plath, my English teacher told our class that he loved his job because he heard a new idea nearly every day. I am continually amazed by this capacity for originality that characterises our relationship with literature; by the idea that everyone has something unique to say about a literary text. It is my belief that the most effective tutors are galvanised by this desire to keep learning. Indeed, despite my passion for literature, I still harbour an affection for mathematics, and remain fascinated by the potential for overlap between these two apparently disparate disciplines: for example, I wrote my dissertation on the role of quantum physics in the work of James Joyce. For this reason, especially with students who find English unintuitive, I frequently employ an 'interdisciplinary' approach, often finding that a student's abilities in other academic fields provide the key for unlocking their potential in English.
Fun Facts About Me
When I'm not tutoring I direct plays, with a particular interest in puppetry and devised theatre. I am also a keen classical singer, having sung professionally with Exeter College and Pusey House, Oxford, and featured on Elbow's album Build A Rocket Boys! I have edited two anthologies of short stories written by young adults living on the Gaza Strip, and also write theatre reviews for Theatre Bubble.
