My Tutoring & Teaching Experience

I have been a teacher of science and mathematics for three years at a co-educational academy in Bolton. As the academy is a non-selective state school, I have taught students with a vast range of abilities, backgrounds and levels of engagement and have led on projects that aim to challenge gifted and talented students looking to apply to the top universities. These have included using my links at Trinity College to organise residential courses at Cambridge University and organising medical school taster courses run by medical students from the University of Manchester.

This commitment to my students and the ensuing positive effect on their attainment has increased in scope since becoming assistant head of science and I have revelled in this increased level of responsibility that has given me a wider perspective on how to improve the achievement of all students, particularly those who are under-performing.

My Approach to Tutoring

I am a firm believer in Carol Dweck's "growth mindset" philosophy that argues that intelligence is not fixed and success can be achieved through hard work and a belief that one is capable of the seemingly impossible given enough effective practice. I strive to achieve this by instilling in my students a determination to succeed and a confidence in their own abilities that allows them to maximise their potential. I also work with the students to improve their metacognition and encourage them to understand when they are learning and committing things to their long term memory. It is important to develop techniques unique to each student that aid long term retention and show students how to develop these for themselves.

Fun Facts About Me

I enjoy playing football and represented both Trinity College and Cambridge during my time there.

My Client Testimonials

  • GCSE Maths and Sciences
"Mathew is an excellent tutor. My daughter enjoyed her lessons with Mathew enormously. She thinks Mathew is very patient and is extremely clear, precise and direct in his explanation on the mathematical issues."
  • Engineering Tripos at Cambridge Application
"We are very grateful for the job that Mathew has done for [our son], especially the diagnostic part of it, as we didn't know that he had significant gaps in his knowledge. We found Mathew very helpful managing the time pressure problem (and that was a main weakness for our son!)"
  • GCSE Science
""A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and still have a love of learning." This is how I would like to describe Mathew Smith. Mathew is always available when my son needs help in his science subjects. He is patient and my son has learnt a lot from him - we really appreciate his efforts."
  • A level and Pre-U Maths and Further Maths
"Mathew is an extremely clever, kind and patient tutor. His approach is simple and effective. His teaching method is so thorough and has made things so easy even for the Cambridge Pre-U Further Maths syllabus. I have recommended him to many friends and everyone thinks he is great."
  • Engineering
"Mathew is such a clever and inspiring person to have around during the application time. It's very important for boys to have a role model in front of their eyes who is organized, hard working but at the same time very young, pleasant and sporty. Mathew is the perfect example we think!"
  • GCSE Maths and Science
"Mydaughter always finished her lesson with Mathew on a high note telling me how much she had learnt or how well she understood then some of the problems she previously encountered. I anticipate a lot more lessons with Mathew in the near future as my daughter starts her A level Maths in September. I would highly recommend Mathew."

I have been tutoring in London ever since I graduated from the University of Oxford in 2013 with an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences. ...
I am a graduate from Cambridge with 6 years teaching experience at some of the best schools in the country, including St Paul's School, helping students of all ages and abilities understand and appreciate chemistry. I take great pleasure finding the best way to approach difficult topics with students and try to make all of my lessons as relevant and engaging as possible. ...
I am a Cambridge University graduate who graduated with a First Class BA & MSci in Natural Sciences, working as a tutor while I train to become a therapist. I achieved 6 A* A-levels, came 7th of 610 in 1st year Natural Sciences, then was ranked top of the year in my chosen specialty of Materials Science in 2nd year. Realising that the process of learning and development mattered more to me than the content itself, I pivoted away from a career in science to one of teaching and ultimately therapy.

I have 5+ years experience with students aged 4-21, including SEN, in a range of subjects including Math, Physics, Materials Science, English, EFL, entrance exams and even swimming. In my tutoring I specialise in confidence, motivation and exam mindset preparation, and I prioritise deep conceptual understanding over rote memorisation. My lively style is engaging and fosters good relationships with students.

As a training therapist I use my skills to assess the individual needs of every student to create a style and learning plan that works best for them. ...
I am currently medical student in St George's London, and I studied Natural Sciences in Cambridge. I have over 3 years experience teaching a broad range of subjects up to and including A level mathematics and science. I am currently studying for a Master's degree in Psychology at UCL, having already graduated with a 2:1 in Natural Sciences at Nottingham University where I specialised in Chemistry, Biology and Psychology. As part of my undergraduate degree I tutored GCSE and A-level students in Maths, Biology and Chemistry. I also conducted research examining the efficacy of psychotherapeutic medication and reviewed the literature on virtual reality therapy’s benefit as an intervention in weakness following a stroke. Between the ages of 11 and 18, I attended Manchester Grammar School where I achieved 7A* grades at GCSE and AAB at A-level. This experience has given me a very strong understanding, not only of the relevant exam specifications, but also what exactly is needed for students to achieve the top grades and go on to thrive at Russell Group universities. I am very grateful for the teachers and role models I have had, and I am very happy that I can contribute in a similar way. ...
I have just finished a degree in Natural Sciences (Biological) from the University of Cambridge and am now at music college, pursuing my passion for guitar performance. I achieved 5 A*s at A-level (with a 96.1% average at A2), taking subjects: Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Religious Studies. At Cambridge, whilst covering the full range of biological disciplines in first year (from Ecology to Biochemistry) as well as maths, I chose to specialise in Physiology, Development, and Neuroscience in my final year. On top of this, I maintain an interest in Evolutionary Biology (I am a big fan of Richard Dawkins!). For several years at Tonbridge school, I was involved in a community action program called 'Science For Schools', where we would host groups of primary school children weekly, running practicals and performing exciting demonstrations for them; the purpose being to try to encourage enthusiasm for science ...
I have worked with degree level students for years and find tailoring concepts and processes to an individual’s interests exciting. I’m patient and disciplined and enjoy the reward of helping students move past plateaus in their learning, and with a diverse background in many subject areas I can adapt lessons and study to a wide range of individual needs. I am currently working as a doctor and was recently made a teaching coordinator for third year medical students on the Imperial MBBS programme placed at Northwick Park Hospital. ...

I am entering my fifth year studying Medicine at King's College London, a subject that constantly provides its scholars with evolving learning opportunities and requires a dynamic problem solving ability. My study in Medicine has two sides; I have a large interest in the innermost workings of the human body and find its intricacies fascinating, from hard numbers in physiology and biochemistry to the art of anatomy. On the other hand, I also enjoy the patient-doctor interaction and its cultivation through effective communication and problem resolving skills. I organise a London-wide society interested in the specialty of Sports Medicine with the aim of narrowing the gap between the professional and undergraduate worlds. This aim relies heavily on recruiting valuable speakers and opportunities, whilst coordinating the activities of my society and those of university-based societies. I also sit on the committee of the UK's undergraduate Sports Medicine society. My success through my medical career insofar has been built on utilisation of different learning techniques to understand and confidently apply information. I also embrace techniques such as goal-setting to formulate long term plans for personal and organisational development. I was educated at a state comprehensive in Garston, Watford. Throughout secondary school, I did not enjoy the teaching as I was unable to engage with the material or teachers. I missed out on valuable opportunities and my grades foundered. At GCSE level, however, I had great benefit after I started extra-curricular tuition, an experience that made my learning more accessible and enjoyable. Since then, I have embraced 'learning' as a process to be developed, understood and enjoyed. Throughout medical school I have aided colleagues with their own learning and last year, formally tutored for medical practical exams. Outside of Medicine, I like to do many things! I am a keen sportsman, representing King's College London Cycling team. I play a variety of different sports, and am still keen to throw a rugby ball around. I have an extensive reading list that I am working through, and I like to paint when I have a spare weekend. ...
I grew up in Devon and went to a local Grammar School, where I first started tutoring whilst studying for my A-levels. I went on to study Mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 2013 with an MA (1st-class) and MMATH (Merit). I was offered a place at Warwick University to study for my PhD, but ended up changing fields. I am now studying Medicine on an accelerated graduate entry program at Barts and the London School of Medicine, graduating in 2018.

Although I've ended my own career in Maths for now I have never lost my passion for the subject, and enjoy continuing this through tutoring. I've worked with students of all abilities, with the bulk of my experience tutoring Maths and Physics at A-level and GCSE standard. I also tutor Biology and Chemistry, drawing on the past two years I have spent studying Medicine. Studying Medicine has enhanced my tutoring ability, as we spend a considerable amount of time developing our communication skills. ...
