My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
I have been a teacher of science and mathematics for three years at a co-educational academy in Bolton. As the academy is a non-selective state school, I have taught students with a vast range of abilities, backgrounds and levels of engagement and have led on projects that aim to challenge gifted and talented students looking to apply to the top universities. These have included using my links at Trinity College to organise residential courses at Cambridge University and organising medical school taster courses run by medical students from the University of Manchester.
This commitment to my students and the ensuing positive effect on their attainment has increased in scope since becoming assistant head of science and I have revelled in this increased level of responsibility that has given me a wider perspective on how to improve the achievement of all students, particularly those who are under-performing.
My Approach to Tutoring
I am a firm believer in Carol Dweck's "growth mindset" philosophy that argues that intelligence is not fixed and success can be achieved through hard work and a belief that one is capable of the seemingly impossible given enough effective practice. I strive to achieve this by instilling in my students a determination to succeed and a confidence in their own abilities that allows them to maximise their potential. I also work with the students to improve their metacognition and encourage them to understand when they are learning and committing things to their long term memory. It is important to develop techniques unique to each student that aid long term retention and show students how to develop these for themselves.
Fun Facts About Me
I enjoy playing football and represented both Trinity College and Cambridge during my time there.
My Client Testimonials
GCSE Maths and Sciences
"Mathew is an excellent tutor. My daughter enjoyed her lessons with Mathew enormously. She thinks Mathew is very patient and is extremely clear, precise and direct in his explanation on the mathematical issues."
Engineering Tripos at Cambridge Application
"We are very grateful for the job that Mathew has done for [our son], especially the diagnostic part of it, as we didn't know that he had significant gaps in his knowledge. We found Mathew very helpful managing the time pressure problem (and that was a main weakness for our son!)"
""A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and still have a love of learning." This is how I would like to describe Mathew Smith. Mathew is always available when my son needs help in his science subjects. He is patient and my son has learnt a lot from him - we really appreciate his efforts."
A level and Pre-U Maths and Further Maths
"Mathew is an extremely clever, kind and patient tutor. His approach is simple and effective. His teaching method is so thorough and has made things so easy even for the Cambridge Pre-U Further Maths syllabus. I have recommended him to many friends and everyone thinks he is great."
"Mathew is such a clever and inspiring person to have around during the application time. It's very important for boys to have a role model in front of their eyes who is organized, hard working but at the same time very young, pleasant and sporty. Mathew is the perfect example we think!"
GCSE Maths and Science
"Mydaughter always finished her lesson with Mathew on a high note telling me how much she had learnt or how well she understood then some of the problems she previously encountered. I anticipate a lot more lessons with Mathew in the near future as my daughter starts her A level Maths in September. I would highly recommend Mathew."

Charlotte Burford – Private Tutor in London and Surrey
I have been tutoring in the private sector since 2007. Whilst completing my studies I had experience tutoring mathematics for ages 12-16 (including GCSE). During my gap year I worked as a cover supervisor at Simon Langton Girls' Grammar school where I had experience teaching mathematics to Year 8 (12-13 years old) and to a GCSE class. I also had experience teaching Core 1 (AS mathematics model) to a group of highly able students who were taking the exam a year early. Whilst completing my degree I had further experience tutoring GCSE mathematics.
I attended Girton College at the University of Cambridge and studied on the Natural Science Tripos. She took modules in mathematics, chemistry, material science, biochemistry, psychology, neurobiology and physiology. My specialist interest was in physiology and my final year project explored the development of the human middle ear bones. I recently completed a Masters in Clinical Neuroscience at King's College London in which I achieved a distinction and was awarded the Gold Medal for achieving the highest mark in the year. I have since returned to King's to undertake their four year graduate medicine course. I took A-Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics as well as a AS Level in Ancient Greek.
I am passionate about tutoring mathematics as believe the analytical and problem solving skills it develops are crucial for a whole range of academic disciplines or careers. In my spare time I am a keen cyclist and I race for King's College London Cycling Club of which I was also the 2015-2016 President. ...

Patrick Flynn – Private Tutor in Northwest London
I am a Cambridge University graduate who graduated with a First Class BA & MSci in Natural Sciences, working as a tutor while I train to become a therapist. I achieved 6 A* A-levels, came 7th of 610 in 1st year Natural Sciences, then was ranked top of the year in my chosen specialty of Materials Science in 2nd year. Realising that the process of learning and development mattered more to me than the content itself, I pivoted away from a career in science to one of teaching and ultimately therapy.
I have 5+ years experience with students aged 4-21, including SEN, in a range of subjects including Math, Physics, Materials Science, English, EFL, entrance exams and even swimming. In my tutoring I specialise in confidence, motivation and exam mindset preparation, and I prioritise deep conceptual understanding over rote memorisation. My lively style is engaging and fosters good relationships with students.

As part of my undergraduate degree I tutored GCSE and A-level students in Maths, Biology and Chemistry. Between the ages of 11 and 18, I attended Manchester Grammar School where I achieved 7A* grades at GCSE and AAB at A-level. This experience has given me a very strong understanding, not only of the relevant exam specifications, but also what exactly is needed for students to achieve the top grades and go on to thrive at Russell Group universities.
