Oskar Schortz - Professional Teacher in London
Having studied in a boarding school in West Sussex, where I was a deputy-head of house and School prefect, I studied Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. At university, I encountered a wide variety of disciplines and ways of thinking; from politics, to psychology to history. I completed an MSc degree in Law and Anthropology at The London School of Economics (LSE), during which I worked as an administrator for a legal research network and organised conferences for a international think tank, most notably a conference at the European Union parliament in Brussels.
Following my studies, I worked for the Department for Education in Westminster, where I advised schools on how to progress and collaborate with each other. I also began volunteering with a grassroots educational charity that mentors children from underrepresented communities through organising sports coaching and workshops.
I then went on to teach History at Rugby School, a top-tier boarding school in the Midlands, where I taught students between the ages of 13 to 18 years. I was also a pastoral tutor in a boarding house, where I was responsible for helping the sixth form students with their university and UCAS applications.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
My first teaching experience began whilst I was still at school. I took part in a school trip to Romania, where I taught disabled Romanian students Music for two weeks. Through playing keyboard, ukulele, drums and singing, I engaged the class in understanding concepts of rhythm, composition and collaboration. This experience led me to understand the power of emotion and non-verbal communication.
My next experience was being a Saturday teacher for Year 3 students during my university studies. I taught a small class of 6-year-olds English and Maths, developing their numeracy and writing skills in preparation for their KS2 exams. Here, I developed my teaching skills and received training in how to provide the best scaffolding to ensure the children were able to achieve mastery of key concepts. These sessions were small and focused, with only five children attending each week.
I taught History for two years in a successful boarding school and developed personalised teaching for a range of ages and abilities there. For the younger students my lessons are designed to engage and inspire. Through marking and verbal feedback, I help students improve their writing and thinking skills so that they can approach any topic with confidence. For the older students I help them in their analytical and essay writing abilities and apply to the top universities in the country, including Oxbridge. I teach students of all abilities; from those who struggle academically and need significant support, to those who are applying to the best universities in the world.
My Approach to Tutoring
During my initial meeting with a student, I undergo an assessment of their strengths and weaknesses and together we come up with an improvement plan - where the student commits to a focused and personalised learning plan. I aim to instill self-confidence and commitment in every student I teach as I believe these are the fundamental ingredients to academic success.
For the younger students I provide simple, effective and proven learning techniques that are catered towards developing their analytical skills and exam techniques. I also like to bring in how learning can be much broader than classroom-based interactions - by giving tips on how museums, galleries, events and particular books can help them develop as thinkers.
For the older students, I strongly believe in the student’s ability to independently achieve the results they aim for. Through providing a structured framework of learning and effective modelling, they gain the independent study skills that is required for secondary school exams and university life. Whilst providing them with detailed and clear feedback on written and verbal work, I encourage them to go beyond the exam syllabuses and gain a real appreciation of their chosen subject or subjects.
I enjoy tutoring students of all ages - having tutored students from the ages of 6 to 22 - and find the process of engaging in a shared intellectual activity very fulfilling.
Fun Facts About Me
I grew up in the birthplace of Winnie the Pooh, in East Sussex. I enjoy playing most sports in my free time, but I wasn't very sporty when I was growing up! I used to play Chess for England at Junior level, and have travelled abroad to participate in tournaments.
I've recently tried my hand at performing - taking part in stand-up comedy events and even putting my own show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2018. In August 2019 I returned with another solo show about the 'death of truth' in the 21st century.
