Tom Meltzer - Private Tutor in West London
I am a fourth year Physics PhD student at UCL. My occupation relies on my ability to understand complex theoretical concepts and explain them to both technical and non-technical experts.
I am a high achiever, obtaining a First Class (Hons) MPhys Theoretical Physics from The University of Sheffield. In my final year I scored the highest grade in the University for "Analytical Dynamics and Classical Field Theory" (93%). Other final year results include 88% in "Advanced Quantum Mechanics" and 84% in "Aspects of Modern Physics". I currently work in theoretical/computational quantum physics looking at electron scattering in molecules. Therefore I have a good grounding in maths, physics and programming.
I studied all three sciences, maths and further maths at A-level. For G.C.S.E I took triple science, maths and electronics (in addition to 7 other subjects).
In addition to my academic experience I have over two years corporate experience. I successfully completed a highly competitive internship and graduate scheme at Barclays Bank PLC, where I worked predominantly in Credit Risk and Credit Risk Modelling. I left the Bank so that I could develop my technical skills, such as, quantitative analysis and programming. Due to my experience working in a professional environment I am also well equipped to advise students how to write CVs and apply themselves to industry or academia.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
Teaching
I currently tutor 1st year undergraduate students in programming (specifically Mathematica - a computational tool for mathematicians and physicists)
Private Tutoring
- ACT Math - 21 year old student looking to apply to US universities
- SAT Math - 17 year old student looking to apply to US universities
- High school science - 11 year old pupil that had been out of school for 6 months due to health. This involved a series of one-to-one sessions covering the basic curriculum for all three sciences.
Outreach
- Research Summer School - This summer we invited 40 high school students to UCL. The focus was on understanding how research is carried out and giving them first-hand experience by carrying out their own mini project.
- Phys FilmMakers - A project where we teach physics students how to make YouTube-style videos on cutting-edge scientific research within the university department.
My Approach to Tutoring
I am a firm believer that you cannot really learn a subject until you get your hands dirty. You need to get lost in the problems so that you can identify where your key learning points are. I aim to support students by breaking down difficult concepts into simple lessons. Then once a concept has been understood I would move to the practice stage. By providing a comfortable environment for the student to practice problems, they can develop not just their understanding but also their confidence. As a tutor it is my responsibility to help the student identify areas where they are successful and those areas where they need more work. This will help round their knowledge and increase their ability to reach their potential.
This can be summarised as follows;
- First, I believe it is important to gain a solid understanding of the concepts
- Then I focus on practice i.e., working through problems/questions
- The final step is recursive, it involves analysing performance in step 2 to identify strengths and weaknesses
Fun Facts About Me
In my spare time I take part in hackathons (programming challenges). Last year, I entered into Google's HashCode competition with a team of three other colleagues and we came 98th in the UK. I also like to design computer games both in 3D and 2D.
When I am not programming I enjoy playing guitar. I perform in a duet (vocals and acoustic). Personally, I believe it is important not just to focus solely on academic ability but also to express yourself through art.
I maintain a healthy lifestyle, mainly because I enjoy it but also because I can get to work faster. I cycle 60km per week to work and I swim 1-2km in my free evenings. Last summer I cycled across the north of France completing a 350 km circuit in 5 days.
