Yaiza Hernandez Private Tutor in Central London

I graduated from the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain (my hometown) in 2014 with a degree in Modern Languages and Literature, specialising in French, Spanish, and English. After that I moved to France where I graduated with a Masters Degree in Translation from the University of Angers. Following this I started a PhD in French Linguistics applied to the teaching of French as a foreign language at the Complutense University of Madrid. Over the past three years I have had the good fortune of teaching students of many different nationalities, at university level in various institutions in France including the University of Angers, L’UCO (L’Université Catholique de L’Ouest) and the Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Commerciales d'Angers (ESSCA) which offers programs all over the world in Paris, Shangai and Budapest.

I have also served as an official examiner for the Cervantes Institute, and have experience in preparing, organising and supervising their Official Spanish Diploma exams. As part of my PhD I am conducting research in French and Spanish linguistics, collaborating as a member of the prestigious Spanish research laboratory “PAREFRAS”. Currently I live in London and work at a school preparing GCSE and A Level students for their French and Spanish exams.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience

I first started working with young students as an Spanish assistant in a Lycée in France with groups aged 14-17. Later, in Madrid, I was part of a teaching association which offered Spanish classes to foreign students. Afterwards, I taught at undergraduate level at the UCO (Université Catholique de l'Ouest), ESSCA (Business School), Angers Town hall and IUT (University of Angers). Currently I live in London and work at a school preparing GCSE and A Level students for their French and Spanish exams.

My Approach to Tutoring

I believe when you are passionate about something you don’t mind spending time learning. You enjoy it so much you lose all track of time. This is my aim with my students - to transmit my own passion for Spanish Language and Culture, and to help them make progress and reach their full potential.

Fun Facts About Me

Outside of tutoring my interests are linguistics, languages, travelling and theatre, and you may find me speaking at seminars about linguistics or taking part in local productions.

I have a first class degree in French and Latin from University College London, with Dean's List honours. This involved a year teaching English as a foreign language in two schools in Nantes, France. Before university I attended Brighton College with a top academic scholarship, where I achieved A levels in French, Latin, English and History. I graduated in 2014 with a Double First in Modern and Medieval Languages from Trinity College, Cambridge, where I specialised in French and Spanish. Before beginning my graduate studies in September 2019, in order to improve my German, I attended the Middlebury College Intensive Summer Language Program in Middlebury, Vermont, an 8 week, immersive program where all classes and socialising are conducted in German. I moved to London in 2019 to attend the master's programme in the History of Art at the Courtauld Institute (M.A. distinction, 2020; course: German Modernism: Politics, Utopia, and Times of Turmoil).

I recently studied Modern Languages & Management at undergraduate level at Cambridge, won the Eton College Spanish prize, earned top grades at GCSE, AS level & A Level and was awarded a Scholarship in Modern Languages in my 1st year at Cambridge. I am a current graduate student based in London, studying Sustainable Urban Planning & Design. I received my bachelor's in Social Anthropology (with a minor in Environmental Science & Public Policy) from Harvard University in 2015. While at Harvard, I wrote for The Harvard Crimson and The Huffington Post, as well as a variety of other publications. I also conducted research on transportation policy in São Paulo, Brazil for Harvard's Graduate School of Design. I have worked in consulting in New York City, and in the public sector in Stockholm, Sweden.
