What are the SAT II Subject Tests?
SAT Subject tests are a requirement for most students when applying to the United States for College. Traditionally, most universities required 3 Subject Tests, however that number has recently dropped to most schools with a few exceptions. There are 20 tests covering 5 subject areas.

What do the SAT II Subject Tests Assess?
These tests are meant to assess the “second year” of the subject when taken in high school. Therefore, they are at the level of a 16-18 year old who is taking these subjects for their final leaving examination. In America, they most closely follow the Advanced Placement (AP) syllabi for the respective subjects.
I am in a school system outside the US, which SAT II Subject Tests should I take?
Generally, if you are in the UK system, you should aim to take the subjects that you are taking to A level as Subject Tests. For the IB, you have more choice due to the number of subjects. If you are not taking any languages, sciences, or mathematics, then please do get in touch with us to discuss your options. We often recommend Latin, as the GCSE syllabus is strong.
When should I take the SAT II Subject Tests?
Most students will take their subject tests in the spring of the penultimate year of school, regardless of school system. Sometimes, tests need to be taken in the autumn of the final year of school.
How much preparation is required for the SAT II Subject Tests?
Most students will need to invest at least two months of work and up to six months, depending on current skill level in the subject assessed. If you are an international student not studying in the US system, you will have gaps in all of the subjects, and you therefore will need to prepare for the exams. Which schools don’t require the SAT II Subject Tests?
Schools generally fit into the category of “requiring” subject tests or “considering” subject tests. If you are in school outside the United States, subject tests provide another data point to compare you to US students and so are generally extremely helpful. Nevertheless, the schools that don’t absolutely require Subject tests are the following:
